What is ‘Inhabiting the Body’?

Perhaps you’ve been practising yoga for a while. But how much time do you actually spend listening to what’s going on in your body?

We’re not here to learn about the body. We’re here to learn through the body.

We almost always learn to correct, improve or achieve a posture before we have learnt to feel. Each of the nine sessions uses practice to explore a different aspect of bodily experience — support, movement, breath, attention — rather than simply memorising yet another posture.

To inhabit the body, one must first feel before acting.

The route

Nine sessions. A single course, not nine separate workshops.

Each session builds on the previous one. We do not learn to sustain until we have learnt to support, nor do we learn to integrate until we have gone through everything else.

01
To feel
Tuning into the body. Before changing anything, we learn to be aware of it.
02
Support
Finding a place to be. How the body receives and distributes weight.
03
Move
Discover other possibilities. Different ways of organising the same movement.
04
Hold
Finding stability without becoming rigid. How much tension is actually needed?.
05
Breathe
Let our breathing be part of everything we do.
06
Regular
Learning to switch between states – from arousal to calm and back again.
07
To attend to
Discover how care transforms the experience.
08
Adapt
To realise that there is no single way of living. To look for alternatives.
09
Integrate
Stop separating the body, the breath and the mind.

What a session is like

75 minutes of exploration, with a brief theoretical introduction leading into the practical session.

70% practical · 30% theoretical framework

A fleeting thought immediately becomes something you can feel in your own body: understand, experience, observe, integrate.

By the end of the course, you won’t just have learnt more poses: you’ll have developed a greater ability to perceive, greater stability without stiffness, and a more mindful awareness of your own body.

What happens when you change a support?

How much tension do you actually need to support your weight?

What happens when you focus your attention on something?

Who is it for?

All levels

No previous experience of this approach is required.

The course is designed to support you, whatever stage your practice is at.

  • You practise yoga and want to explore beyond the physical form of the poses.
  • You’re curious to understand your body better.
  • Sometimes you feel that in yoga you’re too preoccupied with «doing it right».
  • Are you looking for a more mindful, exploratory and educational practice?.

Who teaches it?

Javier Muriel

Yoga teacher, breathing coach and nature guide (E-RYT500). His work combines body awareness, movement, breathing and mindfulness with an ecological perspective on the relationship between people and their environment — the body is the first landscape.

I’m not looking for the perfect posture, but rather a body that understands itself.
